CRIMESTOPPERS
TIP OF THE WEEK

The Kalispell Police Department is investigating approximately $25,000.00 in counterfeit Postal Money Orders received through local banks.  According to the US Postal Service, the majority of the money orders are coming from outside of the US, usually Nigeria.

People are being contacted via the internet or e-mail and are being asked to cash the money orders.  The person cashed the money order for one of two reasons.  They either geel that they are helping this person out of a difficult situation or they are pronised mone financial reward.  In one case, the person was informed that they inherited a large amount of money from a distant family member and the money orders that were being cashed her aiding in the process to receive that inheritance.  The financial reward could even be part of the proceeds from the money order.  After the checks are cashed, the bank does not receive notice that money order was counterfeit for approximately one to two weeks.  In the meantime, the cash has been wired to an account out of the country.  When it is discovered the check is counterfeit, the person who cashed the check is charded for the amount of the counterfeit money order.

The quality of these counterfeit money orders are very good, but there are security features to look for if you suspect one may be counterfeit.  One of the easiest features to identify is a watermark of Benjamin Franklin on the left side of the money order.  This is visible when held to the light.  The money orders should also have a "USPS" security thread embeded in the Postal Money Order paper.  A person can actually feel that the security thread is embedded, and not printed onto the money order.

If you have been solicited to cash one of these money orders, please call the Kalispell Police Department or the local Postal Inspector.  If you have any information or know of any evidence in this case, please call CRIMESTOPPERS at 752-TIPS (8477).  You do not have to identify yourself to qualify for a cash reward.  CRIMESTOPPERS will pay a reward of up to $1000.00 cash for information leasing to the arrest of person(s) responsible for this or any other crime.  CALL CRIMESTOPPERS TODAY.
